In a tumultuous time, Curzon doesn't just stick his neck out for the Patriots, but for Isabel, time and again. And since he is enslaved, the risks are just that much greater for him when he does so.

He's a wealthy British merchant who despises the patriots. He engages in a bunch of nefarious schemes to overthrow them, donating his wealth, influence, and other resources to the cause. Eventually he must escape to England permanently in order to avoid arrest thanks to Isabel's spy work.
She's a cruel mistress who treats her slaves like animals. Recognizing the strong bond between the sisters, she keeps Ruth with her at all times in order to separate her from Isabel. Eventually she tells Isabel that she's sold Ruth, but actually she sent her to their other property in Charleston.
When she learns of Isabel's espionage work for the patriots, she reveals the truth about Ruth's location to Isabel in order to blackmail her for good behavior. She tells her that Ruth will be drowned as punishment for her -- Isabel's -- misconduct.
She is the elderly aunt of Lockton. She lives on her own estate in New York City. When Isabel is sent to help her out, she takes a liking to the girl. Isabel physically saves her from the fire, and Lady Seymour promises to repay her with kindness. At the Lockton estate, Lady Seymour makes Isabel her personal servant, to help her with her recovery from the trauma of the fire.
Isabel thus discovers that Ruth is not actually lost and she resolves to do everything she can to rescue her and bring her to safety. Sadly, Becky is of poor health and suffers from ailments throughout the book. She disappears when the British invade New York. She is a woman of honor. Jenny feels indebted, and that is why she eventually tries to stand up to Madam Lockton. Jenny offers to buy Isabel and Ruth in order to keep them away from the Locktons. She is a foil character to Madam Lockton as she is kind and Madam is very cruel.
An extremely wealthy woman, Lady Seymour has very influential connections and is able to wield power over others. The Tea Water Pump symbolizes freedom, and this is her greatest feeling of freedom. And this is her only time to meet other people. The seeds symbolize her connection to her family, desire to continue their legacy, and hope for the future. She plants them in an effort to maintain that connection.
When Isabel escapes, she brings the seeds with her, symbolizing her hope to find Ruth and start a new life.
