The information provided by AR scores helps a teacher to determine how a student is progressing through the reading curriculum. These scores and AR levels will determine whether or not a student is on level, below level or above level in reading. As students progress through the AR reading levels, they are assigned points. They can earn and accrue points each time they successfully read an AR book and pass the quiz.

How are AR points determined? Students earn points once they have read the book and passed the quiz. The amount of points that can be earned increases with the complexity of the reading levels. The further up the AR reading levels, the more points can be earned. Schools will often celebrate the number of points earned by students each year. Some may have an end of the year celebration for the most points earned or the most growth made by students.

The AR point system can be a motivator for some students to grow in their independent reading practices. The test uses multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 10 minutes. In independent literature-based reading, ZPD is the range of books that will challenge a child without causing frustration or loss of motivation. ZPDs should be adjusted based on the needs of your child. For example, an ATOS book level of 4. AR points are computed based on the difficulty of the book ATOS readability level and the length of the book number of words.

Accelerated Reader includes several types of quizzes designed to support the development of several reading skills.

The purpose of these quizzes is to determine whether your child has read a book, to measure his literal comprehension of the book, and to provide immediate feedback. Each Reading Practice Quiz consists of 5, 10, or 20 multiple-choice questions depending on book level and length. They are available in English, Spanish, and Recorded Voice formats.

Recorded Voice Quizzes are designed for beginning readers and students learning English. They are professionally recorded by a narrator who reads the quiz questions and answer choices as they appear on screen. Quizzes include 5, 10, or 15 words from a particular book as well as review words from previously read books.

Questions are randomly generated from a or item bank resulting in 12 or 24 quiz questions. Due to item-bank technology, Literacy Skills Quizzes can be taken up to three times. Quiz questions are based on 24 specific, higher-order reading comprehension skills from state standards, basal reading series, and standardized tests. Other Reading Quizzes are designed to determine whether a child read and understood content in his textbook.

Other Reading Quizzes are aligned to a variety of textbooks series and are specifically linked to how textbooks and other materials are used in the class. All school library and classroom books should have the AR levels on the outside or inside cover of the book.

There are also a substantial number of books available that are high interest, low ability Hi-Lo , so that pupils working below expected levels for their age group can potentially access a variety of texts that appeal to their interests. They will need to ensure they have a range of texts at different levels so children have variety and breadth to select books that appeal to them with appropriate challenge.
